O-Y-Knot’s Homemade Electrolyte Solution for Scours
This is a homemade electrolyte solution recipe that was given to me by my grandmother. It can be made by what most of us already have in our pantries and is great to use until you can get to a feed store or to a vet .
I have used it for my 5 children when they were little and have used it for bottle calves and my four legged kids.
Every bottle calf we have ever bought at a sales barn or from a dairy is given this solution before we bring it home and we have not lost one yet to scours.
What you will need:
2 quarts water
1 cup rice, long grain is what I prefer but minute rice can be used in a pinch (the starch from the rice is binding and will help soothe the irritated intestines)
1 ripe banana (the banana is also binding and adds a little potassium)
2 Tbs of corn syrup or molasses (to provide energy & sugars, in an emergency honey can be used but do not use white table sugar. If you do not have a suitable “sugar” to use you can leave the sugar out of the recipe and give the kid a dose of Nutri Drench in its place.)
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp baking soda
A pinch or two of unflavored pectin (optional)
Get a big pot and add the water and rice, bring to a boil, then turn the heat down and let it simmer, stirring from time to time to keep the rice from sticking to the pot until the rice is mushy and the water is grey and murky.
Some of the water will evaporate and some will be absorbed by the rice and you are going to want a quart of the murky, starchy water to make your electrolyte solution so if you need to, add more water.
Stir the rice around real good and give it some good squishes against the side of the pot to push as much starch out as possible.
Now using a colander strain the rice from the water. Save the water! The mushy rice can either be frozen to later use in homemade soup stock or can be a nice little treat for your chickens, pigs or other goats. You want a quart of your rice water to make your electrolyte solution.
Cut up your banana into small pieces and take some of your quart of rice water and pour some of it into a blender then add your cut up banana, 2 Tbs of corn syrup, molasses or honey, pinches of pectin and puree it.
Combine the now liquefied banana and rice water back with your rice water making up a little over a quart and then add your ½ tsp salt and your ¼ baking soda and stir well.
Pour into a bottle and then you will need to cut the hole in the nipple a little larger in order for the solution to come out. This will be thicker than milk. Experiment making the hole a tiny bit bigger until you get it to where the solution will come out neither too fast or too slow.
This is easier with a calf bottle nipple than one for lambs or kids.
With a weak kid it is easier to use a syringe to feed the solution with, just be careful not to choke them by pushing it out too quickly.
Quick Tip: Gatorade can also be used in a pinch for an electrolyte solution
