While Old Man Winter is still hanging around and those summer jackpots and fairs seem an awful long way off, those 2010 show wethers are starting to hit the ground and now is a good time to start planning and preparing so in a few months when those little darlings are ready to be weaned and move to their new homes we are set up and ready for them.
Over the next months we will be going over what we need to have and do to get ourselves and our show wethers ready for the jackpots and fairs we will be taking them to.
We will start with housing, fencing, what supplies we need to have on hand, moving on to how to feed our show wethers, how to care for them (worming-note on the very bottom of this page is a list of drug withdrawal times we need to be aware of so we are able to insure there is no drug residues in our wethers at the end of show season when we sell them, banding, vaccinating, hoof trimming), what equipment we need to show them, fitting and grooming along with tips to break them to lead and getting them ready to go in the show ring.

April Feeding your wether
Your wether needs GOOD Fencing!
Goats are Notorious Escape Artist.
Make sure your fence has no openings for your wether to get out. Goats can squeeze through unbelievably small spaces.
If your goat has horns make sure he isn't able to stick his head through the fence but not pull it back out. A goat with his head stuck in the fence is not only annoying to you, as you will have to get him unstuck, but is at the mercy of predators, will become stressed and will not be able to get to food and water.
Your fence needs to be AT LEAST 4' high, even taller is better as some goats can "fly".
There are many materials you can use for fencing. Used pallets, chain link, field fencing, hog or cattle panels, used dog runs. Barbed wire does not make a good goat fence.
