Wether Selection
NOT!
The Number 1 Rule for Selecting Your Show Wether is
Always Select A Wether That YOULike
Other factors to consider are: What style of wether is preferred by the judges in your area.
Do they prefer the newer style of boer goat; the leaner, taller more tubular style? Or do they prefer the older South African style of boer goat; with the heavier bone, bigger head and skeletal structure?
Does your area require that show wether be disbudded? Or do they allow horns? Knowing this will help you in the ring and in choosing a breeder to purchase your wether from as some prefer not to disbud.
While choosing your wether you want to look closely at its structure, muscle, balance and style.
Starting with the head there are a few tips that can help you choose a good correct wether Wide set eyes, strong nostrils and powerful underjaw
will equal
Width of body, length of loin and good growth potential
Width between the eyes = width of the shoulders and loin.
Length of face = length of rump.
Circumference of forearm = predictor of mass & muscle
Width of chest floor and cannon bone = growth potential
Look for a wether with a nice clearly visible twist that falls straight toward the ground. The longer the twist the better.
Structure:
Structure is like the foundation of a house
Without a strong foundation the house will eventually crumble & fall
Structure refers to the way the skeleton of the goat fits together.
Structure = Growth Potential
A larger framed goat that shows a long neck and body, thick cannon bones and is set wide between the eyes will grow faster.
But remember size alone does not make a better wether.
A large framed wether may be correctly finished at 120 lbs
A small framed wether may be correctly finished at 80 lbs
Volume & Capacity:
Volume and capacity refers to the relationship of body length & width
Good Structure is necessary to support volume & capacity
Muscle:
A wether that walks & stands wide is going to be heavier muscled.
Your wether should have a broad, thick, firm back & loin.
Your wether should have a deep heavily muscled leg and rump.
From behind the widest part of the leg should be the stifle area.
It should be wide through the chest floor with bold shoulders and a prominent forearm muscle.
The chest and forearm are the best indicators of muscling in your wether.
Genetics, Good Feed & Exercise = Muscle
Intensive, short duration exercise developes muscle more effectively.
A 350 yard sprint is plenty for your wether.
The biggest mistake in exercising wethers is to exercise them before they have enough condition on them.
Exercising wethers for too long a period will actually tear down muscle.
Your goal is to produce adrenaline in your wether as adrenaline production encourages development of muscle.
Balance & Style:
Balance is in the eye of the beholder and difficult to explain and can be referred to as “profile” “show” and even “quality”.
Balance is how all the parts of your wether blend together.
The key words to remember are “smooth” & “eye appeal

Size:
Size is important in selecting meat goats
But opposed to structure and muscling, more is not necessarily better!
What is better?
Length
Even though some judges like taller meat goats, it is hard to find a judge that does not like long ones. You will never hear a judge say "This goat is too long".
Nine out of ten times if they are long enough, they are tall enough
